Edmonton Neurotherapy
Bringing balance and efficiency to the brain...

Edmonton Neurotherapy offers quantitative EEG brain imaging and neurometric analysis of brain functioning as well as non-medical brain stimulation and neurofeedback approaches to the remediation of a variety of psychoneurophysiological disorders.

Quantitative EEG (QEEG) neurometric analysis and brain-mapping are assessment tools used to objectively and scientifically evaluate brain functioning on the basis of neuronal electrical activity from the cortex as recorded from the scalp using non-invasive surface electrodes placed in multiple standardized locations using the International 10-20 Electrode Placement System. QEEG neurometric analysis and brain-mapping techniques have scientifically documented ability to aid in the evaluation of such psychoneurophysiological conditions as ADHD, autism, learning disabilities, anxiety, depression, concussion and other brain injury, stroke, epilepsy, and dementia. The information obtained from a QEEG assessment of brain functioning is also an important first step in the development of appropriate neurotherapy treatment plans. For more information on QEEG assessment, GOTO: QEEG Brain-Mapping

Neurotherapy is a broad term that includes a number of related technologies that help the brain to normalize and optimize its functioning and assist in correcting cognitive inefficiences. Neurotherapy techniques take advantage of new brain imaging research that clearly shows how the brain is constantly changing itself in response to experience and its own activity... a concept called "neuroplasticity".

For a truly excellent and highly readable exposition on the topic of neuroplascity and the endless adaptability of the human brain, please read: "The Brain That Changes Itself" by Canadian psychiatrist, Dr. Norman Doidge. [2007; Penguin Books  ISBN: 978-0-14-311310-2]

Neurofeedback methods such as electroencephalographic (EEG) and hemoencephalographic (HEG) biofeedback are used to train the brain to modulate the excitatory and inhibitory patterns of specific neuronal assemblies and pathways as well as brain blood perfusion and oxygenation to increase flexibility and self-regulation of inhibitory and activating patterns. Neurofeedback helps individuals learn how to self-regulate their cognitive and emotional functioning and is gaining widespread recognition as an effective alternate approach to pharmaceuticals for the treatment of many different psychological disorders and chronic psychoneurological conditions.

Brain stimulation technologies use low amperage electricity, flashing light or syncopated sound to directly and safely stimulate the brain to decrease or increase brain activity to improve functioning and reduce problematic symptoms.

Neurotherapeutic treatment modalities can be effective in treating the following conditions or ameliorating specific symptoms related to these conditions:

  • attention deficit disorder (ADD)
  • learning disabilities (LD)
  • dyslexia, reading disability
  • autistic spectrum disorders (ASD)
  • fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS)
  • anxiety disorders (GAD, OCD, PTSD)
  • depression and bipolar disorder (MDD, BPD)
  • chronic pain, fibromyalgia
  • migraine
  • epilepsy, seizure disorders
  • insomnia
  • substance abuse/addictions (including alcohol, tobacco & food)
  • traumatic brain injury (TBI) associated symptoms
