Dr. Horst H. Mueller, RPsych, CRHSP, BCN, ICPP
My name is Dr. Horst Mueller and I am an Alberta-registered psychologist (Alberta College of Psychologists Practice Permit #1290) and sole practitioner of a private psychology practice called Edmonton Neurotherapy located within the premises of Mind Alive Inc. in southeast Edmonton, Alberta.
I have special interests and extensive experience in clinical and health psychology, cognitive-behavioural psychotherapy, applied psychoneurophysiology and biofeedback, as well as neurofeedback and non-invasive neuromodulation technologies. My professional practice focuses on applying these therapeutic approaches and technologies to the treatment of chronic mental and physical health disorders or symptoms that are known to involve psychoneurophysiological dysfunction.
I have attained board-certification in both neurofeedback and psychopharmacology and have over 40 years of experience working as a clinical psychologist in psychiatric, general and rehabilitation hospital settings; community mental health clinics; and in private practice treating both children and adults. I have been treating patients with biofeedback since 1978 and with neurofeeback and brain stimulation techniques since 1995. I also have extensive experience working with persons suffering from chronic pain conditions, including fibromyalgia.
I am currently listed with the Canadian Register of Health Service Psychologists (CRHSP) and I am a Senior Diplomate-Fellow of the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (BCIA), the International College of Prescribing Psychologists (ICPP), and the Prescribing Psychologists' Register (PPR).
I am also affiliated with a number of voluntary professional associations and societies, including the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta (PAA), the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), the Canadian Pain Society (CPS), the Pain Society of Alberta (PSA), the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB), the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research (ISNR), and the Multidisciplinary Association for the Study of Cranio-Cervical Pain (MASCCP). In the past, I have been honored to be elected to the offices of President of the Psychologists' Society of Saskatchewan, the College of Alberta Psychologists, and the Pain Society of Alberta, and I have held positions on the Board of Directors of all these organizations as well as the Psychologists' Association of Alberta and the Canadian Register of Health Service Psychologists at one time or another.
My treatment approach is primarily cognitive-behavioural and psychoneurophysiological; emphasizing the complex interconnectedness of mind and body and the importance of learning and neuroplasticity processes in both health and dysfunction. I specialize in combining cognitive and behavioural psychotherapies with applied biofeedback and neurotherapies to treat disorders of mood and anxiety, brain dysfunction disorders, stress-related medical conditions, and the psychological and neurophysiological factors that may initiate, aggravate or maintain many chronic physical conditions, including chronic pain.
To the best of my knowledge, I am currently the only registered psychologist in Edmonton with BCIA diplomate certification in EEG neurofeedback offering neurotherapies for such brain-based disorders as attention-deficit disorder, autistic spectrum disorders, brain injury related cognitive dysfunction, chronic pain disorders, depression, anxiety disorders (including obsessive-compulsive disorders and PTSD) and insomnia.
All services are by appointment only. Physician referral is not required. My services are not covered by Alberta Health Insurance but may be partially or fully reimbursable as a psychology benefit under many employer or privately funded extended health care insurance policies. Check with your insurance provider to determine what benefits you have and what reimbursement rules may be in effect.
I am also registered as a psychological services provider with Blue Cross Medavie providing services to Veterans' Affairs Canada and RCMP clients under their benefits plans.
My standard fee rate falls within the current fees guidelines of the Psychologists' Association of Alberta GOTO: http://www.psychologistsassociation.ab.ca/site/recommended_fee_schedule.
I offer all new prospective patients a brief initial consultation (maximum 60 minutes) for a special reduced fee of only $90. Any over-time will be billed at my standard fee rate.
